Whale Watching in Dana Point

This Orange County Beach is a prime viewing spot for grey and blue whales making their yearly migration from the Artic to Baja California. While you can technically see a whale pretty much any time during the year, the best moment to catch one is between May and October, especially at the peak of summer.

Monarch Butterflies at the Goleta Monarch Grove

Just north of Santa Barbara, this woodsy area that runs along the Pacific hosts countess monarch butterflies during their winter vacation in California. These vibrant orange and black beauties love to congregate around the eucalyptus and pine trees, making the central coast a perfect haven and excellent region for viewing. 

Sea Otters at Morro Bay

Not far from Morro Bay Rock on the central coast, you’ll find adorable sea otters floating in the calm waters off the shore.  They are most abundant in the fall and springs, when new pups make their debut. 

Foxes on the Channel Islands

A descendent of the grey makes its home on most of the eight Channel Islands. The smallest fox in North America, its population has rebounded thanks to efforts by National Park staff to lower disease and remove potential predators. Though shy, you might be able to spot one most easily on either Santa Cruz or Santa Rosa Islands. The Channel Islands also host many bird species, including both the rare and migratory.

Roosevelt Elk in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

California’s largest land animal, the beautiful Roosevelt elk, frequents the meadows surrounded by the ancient redwoods of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in Humboldt County. Best viewing happens during mating season, August through October, when they frequent the grassy areas near the visitor center.
